DxO PhotoLab 6 Test Results DxO Photolab 6 and Nikon Shot at 16 mm, notice how the image on the left produced by Lightroom has been automatically cropped to remove vignetting that is only there at 15 mm. ![]() The lens profiles apply sharpening corrections only where needed and not across the entire image. The following example, courtesy of DxO, shows the same image file with Lightroom on the left and Photolab on the right. So, from 16-30 mm, the 15mm vignette crop correction is applied, even though it is unnecessary. Other software applies the same crop to remove that, not just at 15mm but across the entire range of focal lengths. Why does this matter? If you take, for example, the newly released Canon 15-30mm STM, it has a heavy vignette at 15mm. They claim: “DxO’s corrections are unique and bespoke to each camera and lens combination.” This is because they have “analyzed hundreds of cameras and thousands of lenses, across tens of thousands of combinations, all using the most extensive testing protocols in the industry.” In comparison, other software uses generic data. This makes a significant difference to the way profiles are applied for cameras and different lenses. Photolab 6 has access to DxO’s extensive lens test data. The shadows slider could be pushed further than in Lightroom, giving more scope for correction before resorting to adjusting the tone curve. When developing raw files, the adjustment sliders were the most precise I have tried. Colors were more vibrant, skin tones looked healthier, and the images were cleaner. It was hard to put my finger on why, but they jumped out more. The photos seemed to have more presence than those produced by Adobe’s raw engine. The developed images were also far better than anything I could achieve in Lightroom Classic. The straight-out-of-camera results were impressive across the range of camera raw files I tested. However, I am also lightly testing the ability to recover shadows and highlight details and how accurate the adjustment sliders are. However, the purpose of these articles is to look solely at the unchanged raw conversions for the different camera brands. ![]() I found the catalog feature simpler to use than Capture One’s but not as intuitive as Lightroom, and it hasn’t the same digital asset management (DAM) functionality. It also has its highly regarded built-in Deep Prime noise reduction.Īlso, like Capture One, which I compared with Lightroom last time, I’m new to PhotoLab 6. But when it comes to bang for your buck, Photolab 6 also includes the excellent Nik Collection. That’s $80 less than the purchase price of Capture One and slightly less than double the price of the Adobe Photographer Plan. There is no subscription, but it has a purchase price of $219. How does it compare to Lightroom Classic? It rides high on its ability to produce superior picture quality, with extra strength coming from its lens profiles. DxO Photolab 6 is an entirely different program from the others I have tested before. ![]() ![]() (As I was writing this I decided to try with a 10k resistor in parallel instead of a 1M resistor. It seems like they must be interfering with each other over AGND, because disconnecting one of the piezos from AGND makes the second piezo work perfectly, and vice versa. The magnitude of the charge resulting from the piezoelectric effect is determined by the relationship: (1) where, F x - amount of force causing deformation d ij piezomodule (generally a tensor). usually striking a piezo causes the value reported by analogRead() to drop to 0 from the "noise value" of 30, though occasionally I get positive readings up closer to 1000. They're not terribly consistent readings. However, once I wire up a second piezo (so now I have one on A0 and one on A3) and connect it to the same AGND like the first one, I start getting weird readings from my piezos. ![]() So basically, my drumset works great for one piezo/drum. I do get a somewhat noisy signal, of a constant "30" reported by analogRead(), which just appears to be a function of the strength of the resistor (1M) I put in parallel to the piezo, but it's pretty easy to work around just by setting a minimum-reading constant in my code. I'm able to pick up the signals using analogRead, and to translate that signal into a midi signal that I pick up in Reaper w/VSTi and make drum sounds with. Wiring things up as kpc diagramed (as well as in several other ways) have all worked pretty well for one piezo. I am a total newb and this is my first major electronics project, though I have been working at it a while (my first approach was using a 555 timer before I learned about the joys of polyphony.long story ) so I understand some of the basics, just not many. ![]() ![]() It’s this fact that makes it easy for photographers to contribute to the “citizen science” of manta ray research. Mantas all have unique markings, the spots on their belly is their own unique “finger print”. The graceful movements of a manta ray disappear when dozens of males are chasing a female all throughout the water column. When a mating dance happens, the energy rockets up tenfold! The chaos of mating sessions makes feeding look like a calm and orderly procession. Mantas are intelligent creatures and will avoid swimmers (mostly!). It’s an amazing site to watch and best experienced by snorkeling. When feeding, mantas spread out in a vertical formation, one just above and behind another in order to “stream” off each other. The most dramatic way to encounter manta rays is when they congregate in large numbers to feed at the surface or attempt to mate. Mobula birostris, Pelagic Manta Feeding and Mating Manta rays visit these areas on a regular basis to have the “cleaners” pick parasites off their skin, mouth, and gills. Cleaning stations are areas where resident cleaner wrasse and other cleaner fish live. The most common sites to encounter manta rays are “cleaning stations”. Pelagic mantas are regularly visitors to sea mounts throughout the West Papua region. Sites such as Manta Alley and Makassar Reef in Komodo, Manta Point in Bali, and Manta Sandy in Raja Ampat are well known areas for reef mantas. In Indonesia, we are lucky to encounter both species of manta rays, with reef mantas being more prevalent. Pelagic mantas, on the other hand, live in deeper waters and roam over a larger territory, but not too far. As the “common” names suggest, reef mantas are found close to shore. Although size is one obvious difference between them, other distinguishing characteristics include markings and habitat. The pelagic mantas can grow up to 7 metres across while the reef species maxes out with a 4 – 5 metre wingspan. There are two different species of manta rays, the Mobula birostris (Pelagic) and the Mobula alfredi (Reef). ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Most fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes are good sources of fiber. ![]() The Institute of Medicine recommends that total fiber intake for adults older than 50 should be at least 30 grams per day for men and 21 grams for women.
